chicks and bikes

Welcome, new chicks!IMG_1208The Flying Fish adopted three more chickens from the feed store in Half Moon Bay (thanks, Aidan and family!) and explored the eggs that had been in the incubator alongside Ginger. They discovered that none of the eggs had been fertilized, so there was no chance of them hatching anyway.IMG_1200They debated helping out the one egg that seemed to have any viability. Ellen explained the problems of having not enough space inside the egg to be able to move around and peck against the shell. Should they crack the egg a little to see if it could do the rest of the work? It was a tough decision to make, because they also had to consider the possibility that the chick inside might have already died.IMG_1203The Ninja Cats worked on couplets together. Their goal was to make fifty by the end of the day.IMG_0479It was so hot at the park that the groundsman sprayed everyone with the hose!IMG_0488IMG_0489After lunch, the Flying Fish decided to crack open the egg. It was an intense emotional moment for the band.IMG_1211Inside, they found that the chick hadn't developed fully and had died.IMG_1223They held a small funeral for the chick and buried it in the courtyard.IMG_1233IMG_1249They named it "Sov," which turns out to be Norwegian for "sleep."IMG_1263Meanwhile, the Ninja Cats rode to the park and back in the heat - all in one group for the first time!IMG_0508IMG_0506Happy warm weekend!
